1º de mayo: Un dia sin inmigrantes
Those of us here, wayyy south of the border, can show solidarity with the U.S. immigrants planning Monday's massive protests north of the border by boycotting U.S. chains for a day. Politically atuned Javier forwarded a list of spots to avoid on the first of May:
Lo que solicitan nuestros hermanos que viven y trabajan en EEUU es que nosotros el 1º de mayo no compremos nada hecho en USA, ni se visiten franquicias o empresas norteamericanas, esto es:Note: Not all of these U.S. companies do business in Argentina (I'd know it if there were a Starbucks around).

PS: The NY Times ran a semi-cryptic editorial today (April 29) supporting the spirit of the protests, but warning immigrants to "tread carefully": The Sleeping Giant (reg req'd). Hmm.
PPS: Looks like the tread was careful: May 2nd's followup editorial gives protests a thumbs up: They Are America (reg req'd).

It's kind of nice not seeing Starbuck's everywhere. They are evil! My cafe was without patio seating because of them. So to have more than 2 tables and 4 chairs it cost's a little small business, $5000. And this is probably a yearly fee.
Thank God there is no Starbucks here. At least this horrible piece of American culture has not made it here. Now Peets....
Allow me to be the first to say that all those chains you listed are franchises and have local Argentina owners. You're not just hurting the big evil American corporations, you're hurting the Argentines that bought the franchise.
Also, FYI, I heard last night (Sunday, April 30, 2006), from someone in the food distribution business that Starbucks is planning on opening 50 stores here in 2007. So, enjoy the local coffee shops while they last.

Wow, I used to love reading your blog, but no more. I can't respect anyone who openly endorses law breaking and ILLEGAL immigration.
The idea was to show support for loosening the U.S.'s immigration laws. Not all laws are just -- ask anyone who lived here under the dictatorship.
Starbucks isn't a franchise. It's a virus!
These arte ILLEGAL immigrants taking advantage of the free services in the US, schools, medical, etc, at the tax payers costs. Including driving with no license and no insurance and many creating criminal gangs.
