Not content with the exporting of the English Private Club concept to NYC via the
Soho House, the English--well, two English guys--have now brought the concept to Buenos Aires.
Time Out Argentina co-editor Matt Chesterton points us to their place,
Club 647, an
Asian-themed club/restaurant where, and I quote, "the luxury and decadence of 40s Shanghai echo against vast walls of antique French smoked mirrors" (can't you just hear the echo?). The club sells annual memberships for 2000 pesos and has a definite 'Are you cool enough?' vibe: the public can book tables for dinner and stay from 8:30 p.m. until 1 a.m. but only those with "a great attitdue, great style and a sense of fun" will be invited to stay on into the night. As the 647 website says, "The expectation of what happens in 647, will always stay in 647." We agree, we think. And Club 647 is not alone: the restaurant
Maat was scheduled to become a private dining club this month (here's a review from
B.A. blogger SaltShaker.net). As Matt C. asks, "Will porteños cough up an annual membership fee for this kind of thing? Is there a big enough contingent of media whores in the city to make it work a la New York or London?"

oh good god, help us all...
Is it really such a bad thing? I can't imagine that BsAs has never had private clubs before. In fact, we all know it has - there are clubs for various nationalities and ethnicities, or even those into polo, scattered throughout the city. So there are two clubs for the swanky set - one based on "attitude, style, and fun" (which admittedly is a soley subjective call on the part of the owners - of course, they also charge a hefty fee for two levels of membership at 647), and the other purely on ability to pay to join (which clearly isn't going as well as hoped since they didn't convert over at the end of June - might be the outrageous amount they were asking for). They'll either get members or not - if not, they'll either go out of business or just be fancy restaurants.
I went and it was fabulous. Great food, great environment, great music - thoroughly recommended!!! (am from London and I liked it even more than Soho House) - it might not be everyone´s cup of tea but I had lots of fun with friends there :))
I have been in buenos aires in a business trip last week. What can I say... = just that tourists i have founded around every night bar in capital federal are people of low class and very little concioussness development. they are also the rich ones... with the same degree of conciousness, lower than the basic. Pay 20000 pesos and be happy in your SoHo. Pay a puta in Black or rent sex by the Internet...whats the fucking difference? ahhhh DONT FORGET> new argentinian tendence of charging extra to extrangers.... Welcome to LA PATRIA GAUCHA!!!
I think its tasteless. There are a lot of people truly struggling in the country as yet, going through the garbage in order to make a living. The last thing we need is to exacerbate elitism and deepen the perception of class difference. That is, to have ppl think that its "all right" and "cool" to pay a frickin' ridiculous $$$$ membership fee just to eat out (and thats more than most ppl earn in a month here). What may be the latest cool trend in London, always the city of sheer excess, is just extra-crass and tasteless in BA, a city where ppl genuinely struggle. This is the country of Che Guevara for Pete's sake! Export other kinds of values guys. Please.
