New tides of tourists sweeping in
I came across this article for University of Utah students, encouraging them to forget Europe and visit Buenos Aires instead. Why? "Buenos Aires, and the rest of Argentina for that matter, is the answer for destitute students seeking an affordable option for something new and promising in travel." Can't make this stuff up. Youth hostels rejoice: more business may be coming your way. Earlier this week, I wrote my first post for Gridskipper about the $200,00 (US$ 65.00) menu--sin vino--at Patagonia Sur, which is obviously aimed at a different type of tourist: those who can't spend money fast enough.
Now, I don't begrudge my city its tourism trade, but I really hope my porteƱa accent improves enough so I can disassociate myself from both the bargain seeking and conspicuous consuming lot of them.

dear students of the university of utah,
please do NOT come to buenos aires. quite simply, we don't want you here. there are already too many americans here and it is having a negative effect on the local culture. it has turned into an unwelcome invasion.
in the past, one could walk and mingle amongst the locals while barely coming into contact with other native english speakers. today it is a disaster, especially for those of us who live and/or work down here and have made BA our home. today we see too many college aged kids who want to do nothing more than take advantage of the exchange rate in order to have a cheap place to party.
stay in utah. whatever you do, please don't come south of brazil. for you college guys, you'll have a much easier time picking up brazilian women compared to argentine girls.
thank you.
regards,
james
