'El Che' Monument Cast

Tomorrow, a bronze monument to Ernesto "Che" Guevara will be taken to a foundry to be cast. Designed by Palermo-based sculptor Andrés Zerneri, the bronze statue will be dedicated on June 14, 2008, which at would have been El Che's birthday if he were still among us and full of piss and vineagar. The statue has an interesting history, outlined in this highly propagandistic Prensa Latina article. Most interesting, the metal used came from a drive to collect keys and other tiny bronze objects:
Over the past two years, 14,454 people from all over the world have contributed more than 3,000 kilograms of bronze to cast the four-meter-tall statue, which will be erected in Rosario, Che's birthplace.
No word on whether Fidel Castro will attend, but I suppose there's hope as it seems he might have some more free time on his hands in the coming year.

If one were to dig just a *little* deeper beneath the romantic myths surrounding Che, the truth would crush his popular image like it crushed everyone who ever followed him during his miserable life. He was willing to murder anyone who differed with his rabid and deluded ideology. Don't take my word for it. Research it for yourself.

Fabio couldn't have said it better. It's difficult to believe that people screaming for justice for the disappeared of the dirty war idolize this mass murderer. This man didn't make "disappear" anyone...he just killed them and admitted it. The Cubans would have preferred that he had stayed in Argentina to bring upon them his deadly wrath instead of traveling so far to kill those that did not agree with his ideology. The same goes for one of the "madres de Plaza de Mayo" who was in Havana after 9-11 and stated that she was happy that 9-11 had occurred. Thousands of innocent people were murdered that day and she was glad? People who truly believe in human rights don't pick and choose. A victim is a victim and a murderer is a murderer.
