Pop Saint: La Difunta Correa
On a rainy day last week, we stopped by Vallecito in San Juan Province to see the homages thanking the deceased (la difunta) Correa for many miracles. Evidently, those miracles include new homes, new trucks, horse-racing victories, marriages... I couldn't stop snapping photos of the outpourings of devotion. (A few more found here.)According to the popular legend, the deceased Señora Correa's first miracle was keeping her baby alive via breastfeeding after dying en route to find her husband, off at war. The image of this miracle is omnipresent in Vallecito. It even appears on a box of cookies (alfajores) I saw at a nearby gas station (that's the penultimate image in the collage above).
