Chau Billboards!

A Buenos Aires streetscape under new sign laws

Like São Paulo recently did, Buenos Aires is planning a major push against "visual pollution". According to a recent Clarín article (and subsequent TreeHugger post), the city has come to an agreement with the outdoor display ad trade groups to remove 40,000 signs from the city--some 60% of the total. It sounds like a fabulous idea, though judging from the usual legal compliance levels here, you'll have to excuse the prerequisite, "I'll believe it when I see it."

The only thing I found uglier than the billboards in Sao Paulo..were looking at all the empty billboard supports they didn't take down afterward. At least this was true as of when I visited Sao Paulo in May of last year.

Wouldn't it be great if they also tried to get rid of the noise pollution. Ah, one can only hope for a billboard-free, less noisy Buenos Aires.

It sounds like that will make for a more pretty Buenos Aires. What what about all that business that will be lost because of the lack of billboards? Hey serious travelers check out this new travel site I found, baraaza.com. You can review destinations, upload pics, and get info for your next trip. Its pretty cool.
