The disappeared were much less than 30000.. The original CONADEP list contained about 8000 names... The 30000 figure was a lie made up by the Argentine radical left, of which Madres de Plaza de Mayo is its greatest exponent. Many of the alleged 'disappeared' miraculously re-appeared alive and well in other parts of the world and some went on to become public officials, judges or supporters of the current government... How some people are so gullible as to believe all the lies and propaganda of the left is beyond my understanding... It seems that for some people, if the left says it, then it must be true.. There's no room for any kind of questioning or critical thinking.

It certainly feels that way. Also, back when the 1:1 parity was still in place going to the United States was painful to the wallet. Now, it feels like a fantastic bargain in most cases, just like it did when things were at 1:1. (except for the restaurants though, but they are catching up).

Hi Ian,

Ugi's Pizza used to cost 2 pesos [or 2 dollars] back in the 1990s. I even remember occasional sales for $1.80. They recently raised their price to 16 pesos or about $4. Even adjusting for US inflation their pizza is about 60% more expensive than it was in 2000.

I saw "El Secreto" last week and really liked it. My only complaints were a few unbelievable twists in the plot (jumping from some old photos to a murder suspicion and finding the murderer in a soccer crowd). I also wondered about the accents -- they sounded more Spanish to me than Argentine -- what did you think?

I am Argentine by birth and of Caucasian European ancestry. For many here to say that we are racist is to not understand the true identity of the Argentine person. We were born within a society (and particularly those born in Buenos Aires, like myself -- which has been and continues to be, the cultural and economic center of the country), whose identity was formed primarily by European customs and mores. This is evident in our manner of speech, dress, socializing, thinking, etc. etc., brought along by those who immigrated to Argentina. These European immigration waves were so vast that the majority of our population is actually descended from these Europeans of many different nationalities. Furthermore, Argentina for many decades did not sustain immigration from other countries other than those of Europe, Armenia, and Japan. Given this reality and the lack of Afro peoples, added to the already reduced indigenous populations in the Northern part of Argentina, have contributed to an identity that thinks of itself mostly as European. And, what is wrong with that? Nothing. If you speak of true discrimination, one must speak of the United States of America, arguably the most racially biased country in the world. Take a look at the Census form of 2010 and its attempt to label everyone and fit them within pseudo- categories that are neither ethnic nor racial. A person who speaks Spanish is automatically HISPANIC, regardless of whether that person's race is actually Afro, Caucasian or Asian. Just because that person was born in a Spanish-speaking country, right? Let's go on. The United States, for whom blacks continue to be regarded as second class citizens or third class citizens, is a racially discriminatory nation. Yes, open discrimination is unlawful in the States; that is why it is more of the "closeted" discrimination type. Tell me any other nation where even its own Caucasian people who are mostly poor, less educated and primarily from the South -- although this applies to any territory within the Union actually, -- are labeled White Trash or Trailer Trash. I would like to know. Insofar as Argentina is concerned, let us Argentines be. We are a tolerant people, and those racial barriers others ( who are not Argentine and who do not share in our national identity), want to erect for the simple reason that we are a Latin American country made-up mainly of descendants of Europeans, simply have no merit. To understand an Argentine one must be Argentine.

I had a lenghlty discussion about this subject yesterday which, don't be afraid, I won't repeat completly here. But the bottom line is that to me it is astonishing to see a lot of young people in Buenos Aires (both Tourists and Locals) having a mouth full about all the porr children and how something should be done about it, but and the same time fill up their noses with coke in the weekend.

There ís a relation between drugs use and poverty in the villas. I wish people took a little more responsibility for their actions instead of just weeping over the injustices in the world…
